Children are too often neglected by a warring couple. A child’s fragile defences often result in them developing emotional distress that is shown in their demeanour, poor schoolwork or in developing body symptoms.
Children require a specialist form of therapy that engages them. Sometimes sand play or play therapy or art therapy. Specialist therapists are brought in by Relationship Services to help those children who are suffering from distress brought about by family breakdown.
In addition, Direct Child Consultants are sometimes asked to interview children when their parents are engaging in mediation. Depending on the age of the children, courts will expect their views to be taken into account.
In some instances, the influence of the extended family is such that it cannot be ignored. We sometimes think it helpful for the extended family to be brought in and carefully managed so as to contribute positively to proceedings.
